Caricature of a brilliant play
Last evening's performance showed some wear. Raoul had lost his charm and timidity, his role lacked strength that rose from virtue (the scarf illustration). While there may be many ways to attempt to direct this Weber hit, the over-the-top expressive quality of the cast lacked the depth and meaning of the role and it's message. The SoapGirls, however, played by the so-called "understudy," nailed it. His was the pathos, the depth of soul, and musically, the best of a stalwart, but unimaginative group. After many years, some of the angst and darkness, the trepidation and exhilaration have worn off. Older acquaintances won't help but be comparative. Christine was charming and bright, but didn't bring the naivete of prior players. His character seemed more deserving than desiring. It is always a sterling production at many levels, and perhaps I write from a jaded opinion having seen it over the years on many stages in several venues. The newcomer will find it engaging at times, to the point of tears, such is the brilliance of the music.
